iPhone Duo: Apple’s First Foldable iPhone — Everything to Know Before Pre-Orders Open

After years of rumors, Apple finally did it. On September 9, the company unveiled the iPhone Duo alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max — its first foldable iPhone, and the most expensive iPhone it has ever sold. The timing is about as tight as it gets: pre-orders open tomorrow, Friday, October 16, at 5:00 a.m. Pacific, and the phone reaches stores on October 23. Here is what Apple actually announced, in plain terms, and what it means if you are thinking about buying one.

The short version

The iPhone Duo folds like a book. Closed, it is a 5.4-inch phone about the size of a passport. Open it and you get a 7.6-inch display — the largest screen ever on an iPhone. It starts at $1,999 for 256GB of storage, runs on the A20 Pro chip, uses Touch ID instead of Face ID, and ships with iOS 27.1. Apple sells it in two colors: Star White and Night Sky, a dark blue.

Price, pre-orders, and release date

When you can buy it

Pre-orders begin Friday, October 16, at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time. The official launch follows on Friday, October 23, in more than 70 countries, with another 28 countries getting it on October 30.

What it costs

There is no way around it — this is a $2,000 phone. Apple priced the iPhone Duo at $1,999 for 256GB, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB, and $3,199 for 2TB. That makes it the most expensive iPhone in Apple’s lineup by a wide margin, sitting in the same territory as Samsung’s top folding phones.

Ways to soften the blow

Apple is offering the Duo through its Upgrade leasing program in partnership with Klarna, starting at $57.99 a month on a 24-month lease. Apple Card Monthly Installments start at $83.29 a month. The major US carriers — T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T — will also be running their own trade-in and installment deals, which is where the price usually gets interesting for upgraders.

Design: a phone that folds like a book

Two screens in one device

The Duo is a book-style foldable, not a clamshell. When closed, you use a 5.4-inch outer display — Apple notes it is roughly the size of the discontinued iPhone mini’s screen. Unfold it and the inner display stretches to 7.6 inches. Apple describes the shape as passport-like, and when open the phone is wider than it is tall, landing somewhere between a small iPhone and an iPad mini. Both displays share the same aspect ratio, so moving content from the outer screen to the inner one feels continuous rather than jarring.

The hinge and the crease question

Every foldable lives or dies by its hinge, and Apple clearly knows it. The Duo’s hinge is titanium with a 3D-printed cover and more than 100 components, designed to control the opening precisely and support the center of the display. Closing the phone produces a magnetic click. The inner display is built from 10 ultrathin layers, including a nano-texture polymer cover that Apple says is 40 percent stiffer than materials used in other foldables, with custom adhesives that let the layers glide to relieve bend stress. Apple says this minimizes the crease — but it has not published any fold-cycle test data, so long-term durability is still an open question.

Thinnest and heaviest at once

The Duo holds two iPhone records at the same time. Unfolded, at 5.2mm, it is the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever made — thinner than the iPhone Air’s 5.64mm. But at 254 grams, it is also the heaviest iPhone ever. Folded, it measures 11.3mm thick. The frame is grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish, the phone carries an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, and the outer display is protected by Ceramic Shield 2.

The displays, up close

What you are actually looking at

Both screens are OLED with 120Hz ProMotion, Always-On, True Tone, and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. The outer 5.4-inch display runs at 1398 × 2034 (460 pixels per inch); the inner 7.6-inch display at 1878 × 2670 (430 ppi). The inner screen hides its FaceTime camera under the display panel, while the outer display has a 12MP hole-punch front camera. A nano-texture layer on the inner display cuts glare and helps hide the crease.

Performance and battery

The A20 Pro chip

The Duo runs the same 2nm A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro: two performance cores, four efficiency cores, and a 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators that Apple says is up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro. A new vapor chamber cooling system delivers up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, which matters more than usual here — a foldable running two displays and desktop-class multitasking generates real heat.

Battery life and charging

There are batteries in both halves of the phone, managed as a single battery. Apple rates it for up to 24 hours of typical use when switching between the two displays, with up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner screen and 44 hours on the outer. Fast charging takes it to 50 percent in 20 minutes over USB-C with a 60W or better adapter, and it supports 25W MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging.

Cameras

The rear system

The back of the Duo carries a camera plateau with two lenses: a 48MP Fusion Main wide camera (26mm) with a 12MP 2× optical-quality zoom option, and a 48MP Ultra Wide (13mm) with macro support. There is no telephoto lens and no variable aperture — Apple kept those for the iPhone 18 Pro models. You do get the new Photographic Styles 3 with texture and grain controls, plus manual white balance and exposure adjustments.

Duo-only camera tricks

Apple built several features that only make sense on a foldable. Smart Take uses on-device AI to detect when everyone is ready for a group shot, so you can skip the timer. Duo Preview shows the person you are photographing a live preview on the outer display, so they can adjust their pose. Kid Cue plays Peanuts animations to get children to look at the lens. And Duo FaceTime lets you use the inner and outer cameras on the same call, so more people can join in.

Video

The main camera records 4K120 Dolby Vision, with Cinematic mode up to 4K60 and the option to apply effects after capture, plus 4K Dual Capture and 4K Dolby Vision time-lapse. The tent position — half-folded, standing on its own — effectively gives you a tripod without carrying one.

iOS 27 on a foldable

A vertical dock and two Dynamic Islands

The Duo ships with iOS 27.1, and Apple reworked the interface around the new shape. The Dock is vertical, tucked along the side of the display instead of the bottom. There is a vertical Dynamic Island on both displays, two Home Screen pages, and a widget column on the inner display. The status bar moved to the upper corner.

Multitasking and StandBy

You can run two apps side by side, or two windows of the same app in Split View — the use case that justifies the big inner screen. Content adapts as you rotate and flip between displays, and the phone works half-folded in portrait or landscape. A Duo-specific StandBy mode works even when the phone is not charging, showing widgets, the time, and an alarm-clock option that wakes you with a soft glow.

Apple Pencil support is coming

Apple says Apple Pencil support will arrive on the Duo before the end of 2026, but only for the USB-C Apple Pencil. Sketching and markup on a 7.6-inch canvas could end up being one of the sleeper features here.

Connectivity: eSIM only, Touch ID instead of Face ID

No SIM tray, no Face ID

Like the iPhone Air, the Duo is eSIM only worldwide — there is no physical SIM tray. It uses Apple’s own C2 modem with sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G (mmWave in the US), plus a new N1 networking chip with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. And in a notable break from recent iPhones, there is no Face ID: Apple says there was no room for the TrueDepth camera system, so the Duo uses a Touch ID side button that works whether the phone is open or closed. You can also unlock it with a connected Apple Watch.

Where to see it before you buy

Apple’s big retail push

Apple knows a $1,999 foldable is a hands-on sell. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, stores are getting dedicated “Avenue” display zones with custom MagSafe stands that hold an unfolded Duo between two standard iPhones, and flagships like Fifth Avenue in New York will carry more than 150 demo units. Gurman also reports a small personal touch: iPhone Duos bought in Apple’s US stores can greet the buyer by name — “Hello, Mark” — on the first-boot screen, in English or Spanish. If you are on the fence, this is a phone worth touching before you commit.

Should you pre-order the iPhone Duo?

Who it is genuinely for

The Duo makes the most sense for people who already live on their phone: heavy multitaskers, readers, travelers who want a small tablet without carrying one, and anyone who has been waiting for Apple to enter the foldable market rather than buying a Samsung or Pixel fold. If that is you, pre-ordering on October 16 gets you in the first wave.

The trade-offs to weigh

Be clear-eyed about what you are buying. It is the most expensive iPhone ever and the heaviest, there is no telephoto camera, there is no Face ID, and it is a first-generation foldable — the category where long-term hinge and crease durability is always the open question. Early adopters are, to some extent, paying to find out.

Timing your purchase

If you are not in a hurry, remember that launch-day pricing is the worst pricing. Apple rarely discounts its own phones, but carriers and retailers do — and the holiday season is six weeks away. Our guide to Black Friday vs Cyber Monday breaks down when electronics actually hit their lowest prices, and the same timing logic we use for big tech purchases applies here: unless you need it on day one, waiting for the first carrier promotions usually pays.

The bottom line: the iPhone Duo is real, it is impressive on paper, and pre-orders open tomorrow. Whether it is worth $1,999, only your hands — and your wallet — can decide. If you are curious, go fold one in a store first.
